INFO
I was born in Philadelphia - the 6th of 7 children. Because I had older brothers and sisters, I was exposed to countercultural books, movies and music from a young age. I loved Burroughs, Bowie and Antonioni before I got out of grade school.
Spending a lot of time in front of the TV set, I watched movies - everything from Saturday morning horror flicks to the great classics - as well as the European films I went to see at TLA and the Ritz. Going to movies became my favorite thing to do and I began to think maybe I could make them, too.
I started heading to New York to see movies and bands and heard you could study filmmaking. My decision was made.
I moved to Greenwich Village and learned both in school and in art houses and bookstores. When I had no money for films, I watched them on TV. I started shooting super-8 and some 16 mm.
When I graduated, I started editing news for NBC. I learned how to put together all the elements to tell a story clearly. How imagery works emotionally. How to add the right soundbites and the right music. Filmmaking on a small scale. But non-fiction was a constraint for me - my real love was fiction. So I started writing scripts in my spare time and entering contests. My scripts received top 20 for Sundance labs and top 5 for the Independent Feature Project.
I began working as a PA so I could watch how directors work with actors. And how production works. This gave me the confidence and skills to make bigger films. I made two shorts - one a period piece and one an experimental narrative. My period piece won a PBS Independent Images Award. I also shoot and edit small pieces to keep my directing and production skills sharp.
I wrote FLOWN to combine my love of coming of age stories with a modern bohemian vampire story - set against the warehouse parties and hipster culture of Brooklyn. With Iggy Pop and a cool script, I can't wait.
