FAQ
Is only one individual allowed as the Entrant on a submission, or would we both be classified as the Entrant?
Only one entrant is allowed on the data sheet, but you can include a partner or an entire filmmaking team on the bio/resume and the filmmaking statement.
I am a writer, not a filmmaker, per se. Can I still submit?
Absolutely, if you are a writer, actor, producer or any other non-directorial member of the filmmaking team, you can still submit as long as you control the rights to the material you are submitting. If the project progresses to the later rounds, we will have to attach a director prior to final judging. If the submitting entrant does not have a director selected, we will attach a director in consultation with the submitting entrant.
I am new to filmmaking so I don't have much of a filmmaking resume. Is that an issue?
Not at all. Life experience is as important, in some ways more important, than filmmaking experience. The resume/bio is simply for us to see what you've done in your life. We do however, want to see a strong, passionate filmmaking statement and a really great synopsis.
I have already written a complete script. Is it okay to just submit the entire script along with everything else?
It's great that you have a completed script! However, we do not need it, yet, at this first stage of the selection process. As we narrow down the field, we will have a means for you to upload your script to us. In the meantime, please do include the fact that you have a completed script in any of your submission materials.
Who are the previous winners?
There are none. This is the first year of the competition.
Will this Competition take place every year?
That is uncertain at this point. Much will depend on the success of this inaugural year.
Who are the judges?
The early submissions will be judged by a committee of Filmmakers Alliance staff and board members. The final rounds will be judged by a broad mix of established film professionals. Specific names will be released closer to the final rounds.
How will the grant be administered?
FA Productions will be acting as the production entity of record and the grant will be managed through that entity and administered directly to the production. Funds will not be released unconditionally to the filmmaker(s).
Can the grant go to my production company, if I have one?
No, it must be administered through FA Productions. However, your company can be involved as a production partner, if appropriate.
Will I have to submit a script that can be made for only $500k?
Not necessarily. We are currently working to develop additional cash resources, although that is by no means guaranteed at this point. Also, filmmakers can contribute to funding the film. However, if the project budgets out higher than $500k, the filmmaker(s) will have to show proof of funding to cover the additional cost of the film PRIOR to the film's selection for the award.
Can I contribute funding to the production?
As stated in the previous question, absolutely yes. In that case, the filmmaker(s) become profit participants commensurate with their financial contribution.
Who owns the copyright?
The submitting filmmaker(s) will own the copyright. However, FA Productions will control/manage the world-wide distribution rights for 7 years. Those rights revert back to the copyright holder after that period.
